July: A Month Dedicated to the Precious Blood of Christ

Happy Sunday! Before returning to our regular reflections, I want to point out a beautiful Catholic Tradition that is meant to be done every July: honoring the Precious Blood of Christ. This can include special prayers or the Litany of the Precious Blood as a family. I would invite everyone to take time to reflect on this great gift of Christ that was poured out so generously on the Cross for our Salvation. July, for this reason, is dedicated to the Precious Blood. Here, therefore, are some reflections from Pope Benedict XVI from September 10, 2010 on this great gift:

The Eucharistic sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ embraces in turn the mystery of our Lord’s continuing passion in the members of his Mystical Body, the Church in every age. Here the great crucifix which towers above us serves as a reminder that Christ, our eternal high priest, daily unites our own sacrifices, our own sufferings, our own needs, hopes and aspirations, to the infinite merits of his sacrifice. Through him, with him, and in him, we lift up our own bodies as a sacrifice holy and acceptable to God (cf. Rom 12:1). In this sense we are caught up in his eternal oblation, completing, as Saint Paul says, in our flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, the Church (cf. Col 1:24). In the life of the Church, in her trials and tribulations, Christ continues, in the stark phrase of Pascal, to be in agony until the end of the world (Pensées, 553, éd. Brunschvicg).

We see this aspect of the mystery of Christ’s precious blood represented, most eloquently, by the martyrs of every age, who drank from the cup which Christ himself drank, and whose own blood, shed in union with his sacrifice, gives new life to the Church. It is also reflected in our brothers and sisters throughout the world who even now are suffering discrimination and persecution for their Christian faith. Yet it is also present, often hidden in the suffering of all those individual Christians who daily unite their sacrifices to those of the Lord for the sanctification of the Church and the redemption of the world. My thoughts go in a special way to all those who are spiritually united with this Eucharistic celebration, and in particular the sick, the elderly, the handicapped and those who suffer mentally and spiritually….

How much contemporary society needs this witness! How much we need, in the Church and in society, witnesses of the beauty of holiness, witnesses of the splendour of truth, witnesses of the joy and freedom born of a living relationship with Christ! One of the greatest challenges facing us today is how to speak convincingly of the wisdom and liberating power of God’s word to a world which all too often sees the Gospel as a constriction of human freedom, instead of the truth which liberates our minds and enlightens our efforts to live wisely and well, both as individuals and as members of society.

¡Feliz domingo! Antes de regresar a nuestras reflexiones habituales, quiero señalar una hermosa tradición católica que se debe realizar cada mes de julio: honrar la Preciosa Sangre de Cristo. Esto puede incluir oraciones especiales o las Letanías de la Preciosa Sangre en familia. Invito a todos a tomarse un tiempo para reflexionar sobre este gran regalo de Cristo que fue derramado tan generosamente en la Cruz para nuestra Salvación. Julio, por esta razón, está dedicado a la Preciosa Sangre. Aquí, por lo tanto, hay algunas reflexiones del Papa Benedicto XVI del 10 de septiembre de 2010 sobre este gran don:

El sacrificio eucarístico del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo abarca a su vez el misterio de la pasión continua de nuestro Señor en los miembros de su Cuerpo Místico, la Iglesia de todas las épocas. Aquí, el gran crucifijo que se eleva sobre nosotros sirve como un recordatorio de que Cristo, nuestro eterno sumo sacerdote, une diariamente nuestros propios sacrificios, nuestros propios sufrimientos, nuestras propias necesidades, esperanzas y aspiraciones, a los méritos infinitos de su sacrificio. A través de él, con él y en él, elevamos nuestros propios cuerpos como un sacrificio santo y agradable a Dios (cf. Rom 12, 1). En este sentido, somos envueltos en su oblación eterna, completando, como dice San Pablo, en nuestra carne lo que falta a los sufrimientos de Cristo por el bien de su cuerpo, la Iglesia (cf. Col 1, 24). En la vida de la Iglesia, en sus pruebas y tribulaciones, Cristo continúa, en la cruda frase de Pascal, en agonía hasta el fin del mundo (Pensées, 553, éd. Brunschvicg).

Vemos este aspecto del misterio de la preciosa sangre de Cristo representado, de la manera más elocuente, por los mártires de todas las épocas, que bebieron de la copa que el mismo Cristo bebió, y cuya propia sangre, derramada en unión con su sacrificio, da nueva vida a la Iglesia. También se refleja en nuestros hermanos y hermanas de todo el mundo que, incluso ahora, sufren discriminación y persecución por su fe cristiana. Sin embargo, también está presente, a menudo oculto, en el sufrimiento de todos aquellos cristianos individuales que diariamente unen sus sacrificios a los del Señor para la santificación de la Iglesia y la redención del mundo. Mis pensamientos se dirigen de manera especial a todos aquellos que están espiritualmente unidos a esta celebración eucarística, y en particular a los enfermos, los ancianos, los discapacitados y los que sufren mental y espiritualmente….

¡Cuánto necesita la sociedad contemporánea este testimonio! ¡Cuánto necesitamos, en la Iglesia y en la sociedad, testigos de la belleza de la santidad, testigos del esplendor de la verdad, testigos de la alegría y la libertad que nacen de una relación viva con Cristo! Uno de los mayores desafíos que enfrentamos hoy es cómo hablar de manera convincente de la sabiduría y el poder liberador de la palabra de Dios a un mundo que, con demasiada frecuencia, ve el Evangelio como una restricción de la libertad humana, en lugar de la verdad que libera nuestras mentes e ilumina nuestros esfuerzos para vivir sabia y rectamente, tanto como individuos como miembros de la sociedad.
