Parenting & Temperaments: Sanguine vs. Phlegmatic
Happy Sunday! To conclude our reflections on the Four Classic Temperaments and Marriage, I want to offer
some final points about how to raise children with these temperaments. Please note that these points come from
a book called “The Four Temperaments,” by Fr. Conrad Hock. It is a short but excellent resource for those inter
ested in learning more. We will focus on the Sanguine and the Phlegmatic this week since we covered the Chol
eric and Melancholic last week.
Sanguine: A sanguine child is always tempted by superficial things and can be easily distracted. For this reason,
they need the help of their parents to cultivate a healthy discipline in their prayer life and their daily affairs that will
enable them to accomplish the tasks set in front of them. A regular routine of prayer and meditation that is prayed
at a certain time of the day (e.g. Angelus Prayer) will be extremely helpful. Regular fasting is helpful, as is the
help from parents in order to not allow friendships or activities to overtake his life. Sanguines need to never leave
work unfinished and must be protected from bad company in friendships and relationships in general. Sanguines
are naturally cheerful and must be allowed to enjoy this without overdoing it and not fulfilling their daily tasks.
Phlegmatic: Phlegmatic children can be difficult to parent because external influence has very little, if any, effect
on them due to lack of personal motivation. These are the children that require multiple explanations in hope of
motivating them to make a healthy choice. These children often frustrate their parents due to their lack of ambition
or desire for greatness. These children will need a simple, yet regular routine of daily prayer in combination with a
relatively small number of goals to complete in a day. These goals need to be integrated into an overarching
structure for their life. Phlegmatics, finally, can struggle with making substantial decisions and will help their par
ents and coworkers grow in charity through this. While this temperament can sustain harsh reactions and heavy
discipline, it is helpful to make it clear to them why the punishment is being given (as opposed to parents punish
ing the child in frustration).
Finally, for all of our faithful parents out there, please know that I am grateful for your efforts in raising your chil
dren. Thank you for all of your hard work and love for your families. Happy Sunday!
Stay tuned next week!
¡Feliz domingo!
¡Feliz domingo!
!Estad atentos a la próxima semana!
