The Phlegmatic Temperament: The Quiet Strength in Marriage
Happy Sunday! As we conclude our reflections on the Classic Temperaments, we will use this time to reflect on the
Phlegmatic temperament. This temperament is often misunderstood within marriage (especially because many husbands
share this temperament), so it is vital to understand this correctly.
Fourth: The Phelgmatic: People with this temperament are usually private, thoughtful, reasonable, full of common
sense, and tolerant. They tend to have a rich inner life, seek a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, and be content with them
selves. They tend to be steadfast, consistent in their habits, and thus steady and faithful friends. While they can appear
ponderous or clumsy in their approach, they only appear so in relation to the more emotional temperaments. Phlegmatic
individuals may struggle with laziness, the inability to confront or take initiative, and doing the wrong thing in order to
please others. They will need God’s grace to cultivate fortitude and strength of will. Phlegmatic saints include Saint
Thomas Aquinas and Pope Saint John XXIII.
What this means for marriage: Phlegmatic spouses (usually the husbands, but not always) are often misunderstood as
being disinterested or lazy. The other temperaments can see them as not meeting the demands placed upon them in mar
riage and family life. This can further be aggravated by the lack of emotion, which to the other temperaments, will come
across as a lack of caring about a given situation. This is not the case, and the other spouses must learn to appreciate the
stable force that their phlegmatic spouse can be. Phlegmatic spouses, for their part, will need to work hard to show a bit
more emotion in moments of familial struggle. This will communicate to their spouses that they too are impacted by the
particular suffering that the family is experiencing. They must also communicate something of their heart regularly to
their spouse as a way to keep their relationship strong and communicate their engagement in their marriage to the other
person.
One final (general) point: If you find yourself wondering which temperament you are, here is a fantastic quiz to take:
Enjoy!
¡Feliz domingo!
ten satisfechas consigo mismas.
